Commands: MIDI, OSC, network, projectors, OBS

Elements on a Commands track make other devices do something at the right moment: recall a mixer scene, close the projector shutter, start recording in OBS. Every command has a Test now button that sends it right away without running the show.

MIDI needs only Chrome or Edge. OSC, network commands, PJLink and Wake-on-LAN go through the Bridge. OBS on the same computer works without the Bridge too.

Devices

OSC, network commands, projectors and OBS talk to a device: a piece of equipment or software with a network address. Pick it from the list, or create one with New… from the element itself. Each device has a Name, Address (for example 192.168.1.40), Port, Transport (UDP or TCP, for OSC) and, if needed, a Password. All the show's devices are also listed under Connections › Network, with their status.

MIDI message

  • MIDI port: the output, or the first available.
  • Message: note on, note off, control change, program change, pitch bend, SysEx, MIDI Show Control, raw bytes.
  • Channel, number (note, controller or program) and value.
  • For MIDI Show Control: command (GO, STOP, RESUME, LOAD, SET, FIRE, ALL_OFF, RESTORE, RESET), cue number, list and Device ID. This way Regia drives a lighting console or another control system.
  • For SysEx and raw bytes, type the bytes in hex, separated by spaces.

Tip: many digital mixers recall a scene with a program change. Put a MIDI program change message at the start of each cue and the mixer follows the show.

MIDI file

Plays a .mid file to a MIDI output: backing parts for keyboards and sound modules, lighting sequences recorded as MIDI. You can Transpose by semitones and change the Speed.

OSC message

Pick the device, type the OSC address (for example /scene/recall) and add values with Add argument: float, int, string, true, false. Works with digital mixers, QLab, Resolume, TouchDesigner, Companion, TouchOSC and any software that speaks OSC.

Network command

  • TCP or UDP: address, port and Payload. In the text \r and \n are line breaks and \x0D sends a byte. With Hex you type the bytes (02 50 4F 4E 03).
  • HTTP: method (GET, POST, PUT), URL and payload. For local network devices with a web interface: smart plugs, video matrices, LED wall controllers.

Almost every networked projector understands PJLink. Commands: Power on, Power off, Shutter close (black), Shutter open, Switch input (11 = RGB 1, 31 = HDMI 1, 32 = HDMI 2, 51 = network), Freeze and Unfreeze. If the projector has a PJLink password, enter it in the device.

Tip: close the projector shutter during blackout scene changes: no grey glow on the backdrop.

OBS

Switches scene, starts or stops recording and streaming, toggles a source. In OBS enable the WebSocket server (Tools › WebSocket Server Settings) and copy port and password into the device.

Wake computer (WOL)

Enter the MAC address of a computer or projector that supports Wake-on-LAN: at show start, or when an installation opens, Regia powers it on.

Timecode

Sends timecode to keep other devices in sync (mixers, lighting consoles, video):

  • LTC (audio) on an audio output, with its Level in dB;
  • MTC (MIDI) on a MIDI port.

Choose the value it Starts at and the FPS (24, 25, 29.97, 30). Timecode runs for as long as the element lasts.

Action

The Action element controls Regia itself:

Action What it does
Stop Stops an element, a cue or everything, with the chosen fade.
Fade to level Brings an element's volume (or opacity) to a level, gradually. With Then stop it it stops at the end.
Pause all / Resume Pauses everything and resumes it.
Leave loop (devamp) Looping sounds play to their end.
Set standby cue Moves the standby to another cue: jumps, alternative endings.
Fire a cue Fires another cue, cart buttons included. In an installation, point it at the first cue at the end to loop.
Stop all / Fade all Sound and video, at once or over the chosen time. Lights stay.
Lights blackout / Lights grand master The grand master to zero or to a level.
Tempo (BPM) The tempo for tempo-synced light effects.
Video output black or on Level 0 = black on that output, above 0 = back on.
Surtitles Shows the next or previous line.

Memo

A note for whoever is in the booth: “check that mic 3 is on”. With Show as alert it appears large in the booth and on connected phones.

Cue light

Lights up the crew phones: Standby (yellow), GO (green) or Off, on the Stations you choose, with a Message (“fly out the backdrop”). The crew member taps the screen to acknowledge and you see it in the booth. Stations are created under Connections › Phone; see Your phone as a remote.
