Connections: Bridge, MIDI, triggers, timecode

The Connections workspace has six tabs: Phone, Bridge, MIDI, Triggers, Network and Timecode. The phone has its own chapter: Your phone as a remote.

The Bridge

A browser cannot send arbitrary network packets: for security it only talks to websites. The Bridge is a small free app you open on the booth computer that does for Regia what the browser cannot:

  • networked lights with Art-Net and sACN (nodes, consoles, LED walls);
  • OSC to digital mixers, QLab, Resolume, TouchOSC, and incoming OSC from Companion and Stream Deck;
  • PJLink to power and control projectors;
  • TCP, UDP and HTTP commands to any device on the network;
  • Wake-on-LAN to power computers on remotely.

How to use it:

  1. In the Bridge tab download the version for your system (Windows, Mac, Linux). If the browser warns that the file is not commonly downloaded, choose Keep.
  2. Open it. On Windows, if the SmartScreen warning appears: More info › Run anyway. On Mac, open the zip and, the first time, right-click Regia Ponte.command › Open.
  3. Keep its window open during the show.
  4. In Regia switch on Connect to the Bridge. If Chrome asks for permission to access other apps and services on this device, allow it: that's the Bridge. The status turns green and shows the version.

The Bridge only accepts commands from Regia and only from the computer it runs on: no other website or computer on the network can use it.

Warning: if the computer has a firewall, allow the Bridge to use the local network when the system asks. Without that permission, Art-Net, sACN and OSC do not go out.

MIDI

In the MIDI tab press Enable MIDI and accept the browser permission. Regia sees keyboards, controllers, digital mixers, lighting consoles and MIDI interfaces connected over USB right away.

  • Inputs (listening): which ports Regia listens to for commands (cue keys, triggers, MTC timecode).
  • Outputs: the ports you send MIDI messages, MSC, MIDI files and MTC to.
  • Last message: the most recent incoming message, to see what a controller sends.
  • MIDI clock out: sends the tap tempo (the musical note in the Lights workspace, or the T key) to drum machines, sequencers and effects that follow MIDI clock.
  • MIDI Show Control: with Listen to MSC commands a lighting console, or another control system, drives Regia with GO, STOP, RESUME and the cue number. A GO with a number fires the cue with the same number. Device ID 127 = listen to all.

Triggers

Triggers link an outside command to a show action: GO, Stop, Panic, Pause, Resume, Previous or Next cue, Fire a cue, Devamp, Lights blackout, Next or Previous surtitle, Tap tempo.

The buttons at the top add one of each kind:

  • Key: click the field and press the key.
  • MIDI: press Learn and move the controller (a key, a pad, a MIDI pedal).
  • OSC: type the address that will arrive (for example /regia/go).
  • Gamepad or pedal: press Learn and press the gamepad or USB pedal button.

Each trigger has its own on/off switch. Every show starts with these keys:

Key Action
Space GO
Esc Panic
Page Down GO (presentation clickers send this key)
Page Up, Up arrow Previous cue
Down arrow Next cue
P Pause
R Resume
D Devamp
T Tap tempo

Incoming OSC

With the Bridge running and Listen for OSC on, Regia receives OSC commands on the chosen port (53000 by default, the same as QLab). Ready-made addresses:

Address What it does
/go GO
/stop Stop all
/panic Panic
/pause, /resume Pause and resume
/previous, /next Previous or next standby cue
/cue/{number}/start Fires the cue with that number
/cue/{number}/stop Stops that cue
/playhead/{number} Sets that cue as standby
/regia/blackout Lights blackout (toggle)
/regia/tap Tap tempo
/regia/fader/gm {0..1} Grand master
/regia/surtitle/next, /regia/surtitle/previous Surtitles

The addresses follow QLab's: ready-made Bitfocus Companion profiles for Stream Deck work with Regia. Just point them at the booth computer's address, port 53000.

Network

The Network tab lists the show's devices (projectors, mixers, software, equipment) with address, port and status. OSC, Projector, OBS and Network command elements use them. For PJLink projectors you get buttons to check their status and switch them on and off right away.

Incoming timecode

Regia can follow SMPTE timecode coming from another device:

  • Source: LTC from an Audio input (the interface receives the signal like a sound) or MTC from MIDI;
  • Show start: the timecode that matches the start of the timeline;
  • Chase timecode: the timeline jumps by itself to wherever the timecode points.

Cues with a Timecode trigger fire when the timecode reaches their value. The incoming timecode shows at the top right of the tab.
